On a second note I cannot believe how stupid the NDP is!! What harm would it cause it to leave 40 seats to the Wafd and another 40 for the Mahzora(!!!) so the election would look nice!

Is it greed? Or is the abscence of any brains at the NDP headquarter? How did we let people that stupid to rule us. They remind me of the old joke:

I found the following comments on Aljazeera.net:

Naomi Campbell wedding in Karnak Temple

There are two mentalities working here:

1) One that looks to every thing we have as an opportunity to make money and fuel the egyptian economy.

2) The other looks to what is left to us from our grandparents as something to protect and deliver unharmed to our sons. It is not really ours; we are simply keeping it safe for the next generation of egyptians.

In Europe they hardly have this conflict since the Europeans managed to almost completely damage their cities in the two world wide wars they started.

This is also not a conflict in USA and Canada since there nothing "old" there to start with.

So in short this conflict is not really something that most westerners would feel strongly about it. Maybe after 3000 years or so when they will have old stuff of their own they would appreciate the challenge we Egyptians face when a rich person like Ms. Campbell wants to use our oldest temple as a background for her wedding reception.

I finish by saying that being proud and poor could feel better to some Egyptians than being rich and feel abused or humiliated. Money is not always every thing.

Robin Hood and 2500 muslims

Just finished watching the movie robin hood by Russell Crowe. Quite different from the previous version by Kevin Costner. Quite deep and more ideas than sensation.

At one scene very strong words were said when the soldier Robin was being asked by King Richard the lion heart:

-Would god be pleased with my sacrifice (in the crusades).
-No Siar
-why would you say that
-because of the massacre of acre. When you ordered us to herd 2500 Muslim men women and children. The woman tied under my feet was looking to me. It was not a look of fear or anger but that of A pity. She knew that when we would kill them we will all be godless.

Strong words were also said by Robin to king John:
He told him a king cannot demand loyalty without granting justice.
He told him that if he empower all men in england to work and eat from their sweat, he King John, would be stronger. He told him that the people of England is asking for their liberty.

I wish someone in Egypt show that movie to Hosni Mobarak

There was nothing like that of the movie made by Costner. The only reference was showing him in a Turkish prison at the beginning of the movie.

a letter from myself 10 years ahead

I heard about this movement where people say in their 30 write a letter to themselves when they were 20. Only they give it to someone who is actually 20 right now as an advice.

So If I am to receive a letter from myself at 2020 what would it say? Would it thank me for working hard at 2010 to become rich or famous or ... will it blame me for not doing the correct things, wasting time and not saving money to make sure I live comfortably at 2020. Will it thank me for reading a book at 2010 that made me wise at 2020 or will it blame me for not thinking strategically at 2010 to be in the right place in life in 2020 and 2030, ...

Time is flying. One needs to ask what has he/she done today for tomorrow and the next year and the next decade. Are you investing in yourself? Educating yourself? Taking care of yourbody? Or are you so tired you just live a day by day? Is this an execuse? Or we have to continuously thinking about the next 10 years?

I wish every one write a list of the things he wants in 10 years and put a road map to what he is doing today, this week and this month to get these goals achieved in 10 years period.

For myself:

- I think I would like to have nicer car in 10 years (so I have to cut spending and save).

- I want to buy a house in Egypt for my summer vacation (that I mean I really have to save then!)

- I would like to be more successful in my work in 10 years (so I have to invest in teaching myself new skills, be more productive with my time, be more smart where I put my energy, pick the hourse that will win in my field in 10 years and start getting the necessary expertise to be the jockey!

- I want Egypt to be in a better shape. Not necessarily rich but safe, democratic, just society (so I have to keep blogging then ... any thing else I can do? I sent money there!)

- I want USA to be more muslim-friendly (so I have to work harder and show Americans around me how muslims are good people. Yes, unfortuantely, you actually have to prove it here to them).

- I want the world to be a better place for all humans. Less killing, less diseases, less hunger ... (Well for that one I have to a venue to help ... may be act locally within my community?! but I really want to help people all over the world not just those around me ... Should I volunteer for stuff overseas?)

- I want my family to be well (So I have to put time into it or do I have to work to get money or it should be a balance between money and time).

Well ... that is my list for/from 2020.

Democracy starts at home

In my first year in the USA I was living on campus in a big Coop. The house was run by the students. The officers: president, work manager, social officer (the party person), the treasurer and the kitchen manager were all elected every year to run the house. On top of that there were monthly meetings for all members of the house to discuss and vote any urgent matter. This was quite a joy for me, to discuss and vote!

When I was a student in Egypt I was also lucky that my school used to hold election in every class to select the class president althouh in many classes the teacher made the selection based on grades rather than the "program" also the voting was not secret.

I wish every class in Egypt hold election every month and even practice term limits on the class president. Let the students count the votes themselves and practice that at a very young age (this was inspired by a South Park episode).

Totalitarianism

I have two points to make today:

1) Orwell in 1949 said that totalitarianism if not fought against could triumph any where.
This means in our case in Egypt that NDP would never surrender power by its will. Never without a fight!

2) The form of government we have is just a reflection of how we think. Our Egyptian government is corrupt (today we are officially no 98 in the world with no 1 the least corrupted) because we are corrupted! We do not have democracy in politics because we do not practice democracy in our villages and within our families.

So I wish every Egyptian starts the political reform within his or her family.

National public radio

First of all I do not think as a Muslim male I have to wear certain cloth as long I am covering my privates.

Second and this is for all muslims Islam is much more than a dress code. It is a thinking code!

those who support Hosni Mubarak

I just had a thought about those who write comments on the internet praising Hosni Mubarak and/or the NDP:

Of course, I am almost sure they are working for the NDP and getting paid for it. They could also be stupid or uneducated to the extend that they really think NDP is good for Egypt :) ... Having said that .... there is a slight chance that those are Egyptians who truly think NDP and/or Hosni Mubarak is as good as it gets (remember that Movie) ...

My point is, although deep inside I want to screem in their face and call them bad names, I still think they deserve the benefit of doubt ...

Basically I am saying we (those against NDP) should not shame them on their support, but we should be more civilized than them and their brutal security police ... we should simply point out how terrible the experience was and how horrible the outcomes of the 30 years of NDP ruling were on Egypt ... politely and logically ...

This could help us to make sure that the next ruling party(ies) of Egypt communicate better and more civilized than the NDP ever was.

From a long article today in Alquds Alarabi:

France 24 in Arabic and French

I was just watching what is on France24 in Arabic (I can get it on my iPhone anywhere now) and they were discussing how Isreal keep the body of palestanians who committed suicide and how the Palestanians families want the body back to bury them nearby.

Then I switched to France24 in French (again on my iPhone) and they were obviously (my french can is really weak) discussing De Gaulle.

HHmmm .... Discussing what happened in the past is the theme of the two stories ... Should we as arabs discuss the future as well ??? Should we discuss what will happen tomorrow, next year, 10 years from now. Do we ever discuss where we would like to be 100 years from now? 1000 years from now?

Any one is doing this?

Stoning of Women in Islam??

Just listened to Tarek Ramadan Talking on NPR.

One of the topics was Stonig of Women who committed adultry in Islam!!

First I need to say I am not well educated about Islam (unfortunately). I am just an every day Muslim Egyptian who learned about Islam from Official Media ... so do not trust what I am saying below ... go find an official authentic source about Islam ...

That said ... How about that topic? Is it true Muslim Women are required to be stoned if they committed adultry??

Here is what I know .... Not just the woman but both the man and woman who are married (of course married to someone else) and who got caught by 4 witnesses while having sex (not simply naked in the bedroom but actually having sex).

Now what are the chances of four people catching a man and woman cheeting on their respective spouses (really catching them while in act, not before and not after). Almost zero ...

What if you are not married (i.e. you and your sexual partners are singles) and four people catch you having sex ... You do not get stonned but you get lashed and you are free after that!

So what I am saying is that the punishment is there but the only way you can get it is that you confess ... since it is practically very hard to get caught by 4 people actually doing it.

But the question remains why the *theoretical* punishment is so severe on married people who commit adultry while it is rather easy (only getting lashed, no one will cut any thing from you) if you are single and committ adultry ???

The answer in my mind is that the consequences of married people cheating would result in children being born with false family names ... with the potential for later problems when they try to get married later on themselves. Also there is the fact that as a married person doing adultry you are transaggressing against members of the society (your wife or your husband).

So in conclusion the punishment is hard because the crime is terrible (we did not even talk about the rights of those unborn children that deserve the protection of the society as they can not defend themselves and ask for their rights to have a family caring and raising them).

However, as I said it is a theoretical punishment as it is extremely hard to get you caught ...

The single root cause of suicide attacks

Robert Pape and James Feldman conclude that religion (e.g. Islam) has nothing to do with suicide attacks!

October 11, 2010 - NEAL CONAN, host:

This is TALK OF THE NATION. I'm Neal Conan, in Washington.

Since 9/11, terrorists willing to give their own lives have proven to be both very effective and very difficult to stop. And beginning with the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, we've assigned at least part of their motive to religious extremism.

In a new book, Robert Pape and James Feldman conclude that there is a single root cause of suicide attacks, and that religion has nothing to do with it. They argue suicide attackers act to resist foreign military occupation, and they've examined the historical record as part of their proof.

Hardly anybody knows more about these subjects than Robert Pape. So if you'd like to pick his brain about terrorism and the cause of suicide attacks, give us a call: 800-989-8255. Email us: talk@npr.org. You can also join the conversation on our website. That's at npr.org. Click on TALK OF THE NATION.

Later in the program: talking with the devil. Leslie Gelb joins us on the Opinion Page to discuss negotiations with the Taliban.

But first: suicide attacks. Robert Pape is a professor of political science and heads up the Chicago Project on Security and Terrorism. He's coauthor of the new book "Cutting the Fuse," and joins us here in Studio 3A. Nice to have you on the program with us today. Welcome back.

Professor ROBERT PAPE (Political Science, University of Chicago; Author): Thanks, Neal. Great to be here.

CONAN: And this conclusion about military occupation, that's not new. Your evidence is new.

Prof. PAPE: That's exactly right. I put forward the hypothesis before that military occupation is the root cause of suicide terrorism, but never have we had such definitive data behind this hypothesis.

Neal, this kind of research is a little bit like smoking and lung cancer. In the 1940s, there were initial hypotheses that smoking was the root cause of lung cancer, but it wasn't really until the 1950s, when we had robust, voluminous information, to form a true consensus about that empirical relationship.

That's what's new today. You see, I've looked over the last 30 years at over 2,200 suicide terrorist attacks. Over 97 percent of those suicide terrorist attacks are in response to a foreign occupation.

CONAN: And how do you make that determination?

Prof. PAPE: Well, what we do is we actually look a lot like researchers studying smoking and lung cancer, who gets the cancer of suicide terrorism, and who does not.

You see, we can - look, I have a research team of 10 people. We identify suicide attacks when they occur, when an individual kills himself himself or herself herself on a mission to kill others. Then we corroborate that information with multiple sources of verified data, no anonymous Internet chat room information.

And then we seek out the actual identity of the suicide attackers, socioeconomic data about the suicide attackers - really, quite a wealth of information. But perhaps the most important thing we know is simply the geography, the global geography of suicide terrorist attacks.

You see, if suicide terrorism was really just a product of Islamic fundamentalism, as most people have thought, or any ideology independent of circumstance, then it would be pretty scattered around the 1.4 billion Muslims in the world. That's not what we see.

What we see with suicide terrorist attacks as a highly concentrated phenomenon. Again, it's like lung cancer: highly concentrated among smokers. This is highly concentrated among occupiers.

CONAN: You also draw another analogy to cancer. There are - in terrorism in general, as you say, there are lots of different kinds of cancer, some of them benign. There are lots of different kinds of terrorism.

Prof. PAPE: Exactly right. There's many forms of terrorism: ordinary terrorism, demonstrative terrorism, where people don't want to kill anybody, just get a lot of people watching.

What's special about suicide terrorist attacks like 9/11 is that those are the biggest killers, much like lung cancer, which has - there are many forms of cancer which are either less deadly or more benign, and lung cancer's the biggest killer. It's suicide terrorism that we really have to deal with. And if we could take away suicide terrorism, yeah, there'd still be some terrorism out there, but we wouldn't be turning our country, our foreign policy, upside-down.

CONAN: We're talking with Robert Pape. Along with James Feldman, he's the author of the new book "The Explosion of Global Suicide Terrorism and How to Stop It." It's called "Cutting the Fuse." If you'd like to pick his brain about what we know about terrorism in general, suicide terrorism in specific, give us a call: 800-989-8255. Email: talk@npr.org. And we'll begin with Troy, Troy with us from Tacoma.

TROY (Caller): Hey, Dr. Pape, it's great to see that you're on the show here. Yeah, I read your book "Dying to Win," and reference it a couple times. I've been in the Army for almost 19 years. I have five tours in Iraq, spanning over my 19 years. And I can honestly tell you that one thing that scared the Iraqis was not IEDs or rocket attacks. It was a threat of suicide.

So I agree and disagree with you on a couple things, but I wanted to ask you a question. Number one: As suicide terrorism, is it a tactic or a strategy? I know that's a loaded question. But as a tactic, is it defeatable? The same thing as a strategy, is it defeatable?

And the other thing is I would disagree with you on your thesis about foreign occupation. Again, just as a strategy - excuse me, as a tactic, it's used, you know, to scare, you know. But as a strategy, I don't think it's sustainable, and I don't think it's effective.

Now, I know you're going to refer back to - you've got a laundry list, you've got 2,200 incidences that you can refer back to, and some of them that made me believe in your hypothesis, which brought forth in "Dying to Win" was the Beirut attacks. And yes, foreign occupation probably, some would argue, some could argue the other way.

CONAN: And when you talk about the - Troy, when you talk about the Beirut attacks, you're talking about the attacks on the U.S. Marine barracks.

TROY: Yes. Yeah. That's right.

CONAN: Okay.

Prof. PAPE: Those are great questions, Troy, and I really appreciate them. And actually, they're kind of together, because you say: Is suicide terrorism defeatable? And that's actually kind of linked to this argument I'm making about foreign occupation.

You see, if it's really religion that's driving suicide terrorism, then as foreign - and not foreign occupation, then as foreign occupation goes away and religion stays, we should still have robust suicide terrorism.

In fact, we see the opposite. We see not only is case after case of a suicide terrorist campaign triggered - almost immediately, usually - by the onset of foreign forces - you just referenced Lebanon in the early 1980s. That's true of Iraq. That's true of Afghanistan. The - not only does that trigger suicide - does suicide occupation trigger suicide terrorist campaigns, but when the occupation goes down, the suicide terrorism goes down.

Lebanon, since May 2000, there's not been an Israeli presence in Lebanon. You know, since May 2000, Hezbollah - or no other Lebanese -there have been no suicide attacks, zero, not in even in the summer of 2006 when we had a three-week war between Israel and Lebanon.

Iraq, over the last two years, we have been dramatically pulling back our occupation of Iraq, and what has happened? Suicide terrorism is down 85 percent and is...

TROY: I would be very careful. I would be very careful to link the two in Iraq. You know, I'd just be very careful.

Prof. PAPE: Well, Troy, tell me why? I'm definitely...

CONAN: Well, let me ask a question. At least some of the attacks in Iraq were directed against Shia pilgrims.

Prof. PAPE: Yes.

CONAN: That doesn't seem to be an attack against military occupation. These are sectarian.

Prof. PAPE: Exactly right. There is no doubt that every - I'm not trying to claim that the pattern of foreign occupation accounts for 100 percent of the attacks. And there's no doubt that there are some attacks, even in Iraq, that are not tightly linked. But over 85 percent of the suicide attacks have come down in the last two years, and that's true across the board.

And just think about that for a moment. That's a tremendously more secure environment than we had two years ago. And they're coming down. Many people were worried: Oh, what if we started to pull out forces? Wouldn't there be an explosion? Make things worse? Remember those arguments two years ago?

Well, we now have demonstrable evidence - not hypotheses, but demonstrable evidence - that as we withdraw, so do the - let me take Israel, the Second Intifada. Remember, from 2000 to 2005, we had virtually a pizza parlor blowing up almost every month in Israel.

What happened in 2005 was Ariel Sharon set in motion a process - and this was not a guy who was very soft - a process of unilateral withdrawal from Gaza and big parts of the West Bank, building a security fence, not actually withdrawing from offense, and building defenses and unilateral concessions. What did that do? It brought down suicide attack 93 percent.

CONAN: And Robert Pape would argue: Increase the number of U.S. and foreign forces in Afghanistan, we see an increase in suicide attacks...

Prof. PAPE: Another perfect example, Neal. You see, before 2001, when we toppled the Taliban, there were no suicide attacks in Iraq - I'm sorry, in Afghanistan. And then what happened? For the first four years, we had teeny, tiny numbers of forces in Afghanistan, and there were teeny, tiny numbers of suicide attacks.

CONAN: Let's let Troy get in here.

TROY: I was going to say, if you say no attacks, but the fact of the matter is you're not there collecting data. And the fact of the matter is there possibly could have been many attacks, it's just that you weren't able to measure them.

So I totally agree with you - I appreciate your work because what it does is, as far as force protection measures, it causes us in the military to consider that foremost. And so we protect our soldiers and protect our, you know, our bases and whatnot because we know that's a tactic. And I appreciate that you bring that to the forefront. But I would be very careful about saying there are no attacks. No measurable attacks...

Prof. PAPE: Well, Troy, you're right to be somewhat skeptical, but let me just simply say: Remember that these suicide attacks are extremely salient in the local communities. And maybe you're right. Maybe we missed a handful. But do you really think that there were hundreds and hundreds of suicide attacks that somehow could occur, killing all these people, which just simply oblivious to the world? I think that's just simply highly unlikely.

CONAN: Troy, thanks very much for the call. We appreciate it.

TROY: All right. Y'all take care.

CONAN: Bye-bye. But what about that initial attack that spurred all of our interests, 9/11? Nineteen mostly Saudi men crashed airplanes into the World Trade Center. What's that about foreign occupation?

Prof. PAPE: It's about the foreign - our military presence on the Arabian Peninsula in the 1990s, Neal. See, what most Americans either haven't known or haven't remembered is that 1990 was a watershed year in our military deployment to the Arabian peninsula.

Yes, before 1990, we had a few advisors with side arms - mostly Marines with a pistol standing in front of an embassy - but no tanks, no fighter aircraft, no armor units, going all the way back to World War II.

We put them in August 1990 in order to kick Saddam out of Kuwait. We did that six months later, by March '91, and then we never made a decision to stay. We just never left.

CONAN: Well, a lot of those armored forces, like the airplanes, were still there to enforce the U.N. no-fly zones but - and do some other things, too. But indeed, those air forces were still there.

Coming up, more with Robert Pape, who studied every suicide attack from 1987, all the way to 2009. You can pick his brain. Call us: 800-989-8255. Email us: talk@npr.org.

Stay with us. I'm Neal Conan. It's the TALK OF THE NATION, from NPR News.

(Soundbite of music)

CONAN: This is TALK OF THE NATION, from NPR News. I'm Neal Conan in Washington.

We're talking with Robert Pape this hour, the head of the Chicago Project on Security and Terrorism. Not a foreign concept to the United States before September the 11th, 2001, but for Americans, he says there was something terrifyingly new about 9/11 that set it apart, the willingness of 19 people to kill themselves, to kill innocent civilians, massive numbers of them.

Pape argues that the new reality of suicide terrorism called into question all of America's methods for responding to violent threats. You can read how in an excerpt on our website. Go to npr.org. Click on TALK OF THE NATION.

If you have questions for Robert Pape, our number, 800-989-8255. Email talk@npr.org. You can also join the conversation on our website. That's at npr.org. Click on TALK OF THE NATION.

And here's an email question. This is from Carol(ph): It's hard to believe religion does not play a significant role in enabling suicide bombers. Does your guest think recruits would be as forthcoming if there was no belief in heavenly rewards for martyrdom?

Prof. PAPE: Actually, we have a large number of secular suicide terrorists. For many decades, the world leader in suicide terrorism around the world was not at a group that was coming at us or coming at our allies, and they're also not an Islamic group. They were the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, a Marxist group, a secular group, a Hindu group. The secular Tamil Tigers, who had no belief in the afterlife, did more suicide attacks than Hamas.

Further, we have plenty of secular Muslim suicide terrorist groups, such as the PKK in Turkey, which is another Marxist, read anti-religious, suicide terrorist group. And the reason for that is because if, as I'm suggesting, it's foreign occupation which is really the driving trigger that's triggering both religious and secular suicide terrorists, secular suicide terrorists can readily believe they're going to become heroes.

They're going to benefit their community in this world by giving their life. And in fact, many of them make martyr videos precisely to become heroes - that is martyrs - after they die because they believe that they have benefitted their community, again, in this life so well.

In Lebanon, for instance, three-quarters of the suicide attackers were actually Marxists or socialists, making martyr videos to become heroes.

CONAN: Henry's(ph) on the line calling from Bryn Mawr in Pennsylvania.

HENRY (Caller): Hello, Doctor. I respect your statistical, empirical approach entirely, and your argument is compelling. My question is simply: Is there a does collectivism play a role? Do you feel that the economics of the societies that generate suicide terrorism today have a lack of individualism, of individualist capitalism, and is that a role in the philosophy that people have, which leaves them to make selfless acts of killing themselves?

Prof. PAPE: I really don't think that that plays much of a role. It may well do in ways we cannot track empirically with the data. One thing, one example that directly cuts against that is the very first suicide attackers in history were in the first century A.D. They were the Jewish zealots in Zakari.

They were a group of essentially Jewish, let's call them terrorists so to speak, who were trying to rebel against Roman occupation. And what is happening under the circumstances of an occupation is that the occupation itself, that external circumstance, is collectivizing the society so that the societies are not the same before and after an occupation.

Just imagine if there was a Chinese army of 50,000 in Vermont, for example. Would that not have a pretty broad effect on the body politic of the United States? Would let's even assume the administration, the Obama administration, had a peace deal with them and said yes, it's fine for you to be in Vermont. But then that army started suppressing people in New Hampshire. Wouldn't the body politic as a whole begin to feel that, kind of as a collective body? That's what's happening with foreign occupation.

CONAN: Isn't it also, though, a tactic, suicide bombing, of the greatly weaker party? If you had other alternatives, might not you resort to them instead?

Prof. PAPE: You absolutely would. What we see in nearly all suicide terrorist campaigns is that the suicide element comes as a later or last stage, last resort, after ordinary means of resisting an occupation have failed.

So it's not that we see it coming early. You see, if it's just about an excuse for the quick trip to heaven, then we should be seeing suicide terrorism coming very early and exploding for the least provocation. You wouldn't have to have occupation triggering it.

But that's not what we see. What we see is you have occupations, you have resistance to occupation, and then you have really a desperate resistance to the occupation. And that's where the word desperation comes from. It's not being just poor. It's desperate resistance to the occupation.

CONAN: Henry, thanks very much.

HENRY: Thank you.

CONAN: Bye-bye. Let's go next to Derrick(ph), Derrick with us from Moments in Illinois.

GARRETT(ph) (Caller): Hi, it's actually Garrett. But I was calling, and I don't disagree with Robert that occupation certainly could be a contributing factor. But as the root cause, wouldn't we have to see suicide bombing in occupations we are we have in countries that aren't (technical difficulty) Muslim?

So say, like, we've been in Korea since 1952. Why don't we see, you know, a high rate of suicide attacks from Korea?

CONAN: Or Northern Ireland, where a relatively powerless group did not resort to suicide attacks over the course of a very long war.

Prof. PAPE: Well, and of course, remember, Garrett, that in World War II, we did see suicide attack from the kamikazes. The kamikazes did suicide attacks starting in October '44 to try to resist our occupation of their home islands.

CONAN: It was off the coast of the Philippines. We weren't there yet.

Prof. PAPE: Well, we were that's - but they were trying to prevent it. But you're quite right, actually, Garrett. I'm not trying to say that all occupations escalate to suicide terrorism. There are additional factors why some occupations and not others.

And one additional factor is when there's a large social distance between the society of the foreign occupier and the society of the occupied community. A measure of that large social distance is in fact the different religions. So we often see different religions, where Christians occupy Muslims. Or in the case of Sri Lanka, it's Buddhists occupying Hindus.

And so when you have that religious difference, there is a role for religion in the recruiting of suicide attackers, but it's not in the promise of the afterlife. It's in scaring the local community about the religion of the occupier.

So the terrorist leader, when there's a religious difference, can go to the local community and give speeches and say that occupier is driven by religion. They're going to come and take over our way of life, and they're going to enforce their religion on us.

This is exactly what Osama bin Laden does when he refers to the crusaders who are coming to the Arabian Peninsula to damage Muslims, convert Muslims into Christians and basically destroy the way of life of people on the Arabian Peninsula and scaring the bejesus out of both secular and religious Muslims alike.

CONAN: Garrett, thanks very much.

GARRETT: Yeah, thank you.

CONAN: Here's an email from Benedict(ph), one of our new listeners in Houston: Have there been studies done on suicide attacks motivated by economic benefit? In other words, in return for doing this, the families of the suicide bombers are taken care of? And that pertains to the situation in some of the Palestinian territories.

Prof. PAPE: Yes, that was a very common hypothesis in the newspapers in the 1990s. And the Israeli government really did something about that. Starting in 1998, the Israeli government started a policy that when there was a suicide attacker, a Palestinian suicide attacker, they would respond and destroy not just the home of the suicide attacker but five homes of the nearest friends or family member of the suicide attacker, basically from 1998 to 2003 destroying over 500 homes to absolutely make sure there was no economic benefit. Well, when they destroyed those homes, it did nothing but fuel more attacks, I'm afraid. So actually, they stopped it.

CONAN: So deterrence effectively doesn't work.

Prof. PAPE: Deterrence, we need to we can't deter the terrorists once they're starting down the road, once the fuse has been lit, but we can cut the fuse. We can stop the suicide attackers before they start by taking away the occupation driving it.

It's a lot like lung cancer. Once someone has lung cancer, they've really only got a few months to live. The way to stop lung cancer is before it stops, by stopping smoking.

CONAN: Nevertheless, there are situations where occupation is, well, seen as an overriding interest. And you think of obviously, if that is an overriding interest, you're going to have to calculate the losses to suicide bombings as part of the equation.

Prof. PAPE: Neal, you're quite right. I'm not trying to take the position we should never occupy a foreign country. What I'm trying to say is if we do think it's important to occupy a foreign country, we need to understand that comes with the risk of 3,000 American lives.

We're not actually saving 3,000 Americans by doing it. And yes, there may be some instances in the future where we'll look at the world and say yes, it's really worth the risk of 3,000 dead Americans to occupy this country.

CONAN: Let's go next to Ken, and Ken's with us from Southport in North Carolina.

KEN (Caller): Good afternoon, doctor. Interesting comment about scaring the bejesus out of Muslims. But my question is how much you've looked into - you've indirectly answered a little bit - but how much you've looked into the psychology of the individual who says - walks in and says I want to kill myself for this cause. I'm a soldier, who knows he may get killed but hopes he doesn't. These people are directly knowing they're going to go to die for it.

Prof. PAPE: That's exactly right. And so a lot of people think when they look into the psychology of a suicide attacker, they're looking for the kind of psychology they'd seen in ordinary suicide. They're looking for evidence of depression, trauma. That's often what's behind the poverty.

CONAN: Mental illness.

Prof. PAPE: Mental illness. That's often what's behind the poverty idea. And the reason that people look for that is because ordinary suicide, the kind we see in our everyday lives, really does relate to mental illness, personal trauma, extreme poverty, sometimes producing...

CONAN: Or drastic change in economic status.

Prof. PAPE: Exactly right. But what is happening with suicide terrorism is there's actually a different form of psychology of suicide. The form of ordinary suicide that we see is often called egoistic suicide, a personal trauma.

Well, there's another form of suicide called altruistic suicide. That's the kind of suicide we tend to see in militaries, when we see military suicides. Military soldiers often commit suicide for very slight infractions of the military code of honor. Why? They believe they'd embarrassed their whole unit or their friends, their whole group they care about.

CONAN: You think of Mike Boorda, the former chief of Naval operations, who - it turned out may not have been qualified for one of the honors that he wore on his chest and killed himself.

Prof. PAPE: That's exactly right. That's an example, by the way, I just used in a large talk a few days ago, Neal. So I'm glad you mentioned it because, see, in the late '90s, Admiral Boorda was being confronted - I think it was Michael Ware, the Time correspondent, the famous correspondent - with a story where he was going to run a story over a weekend - on a Monday that Boorda had inappropriately, decades before, worn a medal that he got in Vietnam. And what happened exactly...

CONAN: It's not the Congressional Medal of Honor, either. I mean...

Prof. PAPE: Well, a minor medal - it was a minor medal for - it was actually an oak leaf. See, he was in a three - his unit was involved in a three-week engagement in Vietnam. And then in the middle of that engagement, he was hurt - so pulled out - so he deserved a medal for the engagement and a Purple Heart, but not the oak leaf cluster for the ultimate success of the - well, he, himself, didn't figure that out until the late '70s. Then he took it off. And what Ware did he was going to make a big fuss about this.

And what Boorda did is he got the story on a Friday morning, went home, two hours later, wrote a note, killed himself with his service revolver - because this is in the middle of a big fight with the Clinton administration. And he said this is the only way to stop the damage this will do to my service. And it did stop the story.

CONAN: Ken, thanks very much for the phone call.

KEN: Thank you.

CONAN: Talking with Robert Pape, along with James Feldman, author of the new book "Cutting the Fuse: The Explosion of Global Suicide Terrorism and How to Stop It." You're listening to TALK OF THE NATION, from NPR News.

So ending an occupation is a way to stop it. That may not be congruent with other policy interests. So are there ways to reduce the threat of terror - of a suicide bombing?

Prof. PAPE: Absolutely. One of the big things that is in "Cutting the Fuse" that I haven't published before is that there is an intervening way to reduce the occupation before withdrawing forces. We call it in-country balancing, or empowering local groups. So think about it for a moment. What I'm saying is that the local occupation is putting at risk the local community's way of life. Well, if the local community could still secure themselves, become stronger, then they'd have more confidence in their future way of life.

Well, that idea of empowering local groups, that's what helped in Iraq in 2007. You see, the success of helping end the violence we attribute to the thing called a surge in Iraq is really attributable directly in Anbar province to the empowerment of Iraqis to protect themselves.

Essentially, we paid 100,000 Sunni terrorists $300 a month in Anbar province to do one thing: don't kill us. You can go buy guns with that. You can have political power with that. But don't kill us, and you get $300 a month paycheck. Well, that worked wonderfully to bring down, actually, about 40 percent of the suicide terrorism - not quite - not anywhere all of it, but about 40 percent. And that in combination with what we're doing now - the withdrawal of the ground forces - is why Iraq is so stable today.

CONAN: A little more complicated. And inform on those scary guys over there who are still trying to kill us, and you, for working with us now - and so it became a self-enforcing mechanism. And there's some questions now.

But if this were true, if this hypothesis is correct, why, then, the lack of suicide attacks against colonial occupiers around the world in the 19th century, in Latin America, in Africa, in Asia, in other places? Why is this suddenly a phenomenon of the last 30 years?

Prof. PAPE: Because technology does matter. The spread of the small arms revolution in the 20th century - explosives - all around the colonial empire in the late 20th century, in the mid-20th century really enables the phenomenon of suicide bombing that we're familiar with today.

In the 19th century, you just simply didn't have grenades, mines, small arms littered all around India, or you didn't have it littered around those colonial empires. What exactly happened, Neal, is that after World War I - in World War I, there was this mass production of small arms. Those small arms were then defused to the Third World, or what we now what we've often called the Third World. And then what happened there is local groups became much more capable of resisting that colonial occupation. And what we're really seeing with suicide terrorism is actually just the latest move, the latest wave in a growing wave of being able to resist foreign military forces.

CONAN: Some of those Enfield rifles mass produced in the First World War still in use in Afghanistan today. Robert Pape, thank you so much for your time.

Prof. PAPE: Thank you.

CONAN: That'll be an interesting conference here tomorrow at the New America Foundation as Robert Pape and others...

Prof. PAPE: At Capitol Hill.

CONAN: At Capitol Hill.

Prof. PAPE: On Capitol Hill.

CONAN: So, anyway, Robert Pape, his new book, "Cutting the Fuse," along with James Feldman. He's a professor of political science at the University of Chicago, and was kind enough to join us here today in Studio 3A.

Coming up, the Taliban on the Opinion Page. Les Gelb examines the pros and cons of secret talks. Plus, we'll remember one of the 20th century's great sopranos.

I got this joke emailed to me:

This joke reminds me of a terrible fact that the regular every day Egyptians are responsible for corrupting the regular every day Police soldier. If you offer to pay a bribe for a police soldier to park illegally (for example) than you are responsible for ALL the corruption in the society. You can not then complain if someone paid a bigger bribe to get the job you wanted or win the bid that your company was competing for ...

As I learned here in the USA: YOu can not have your cake and eat it too ...

Wake up Egyptians! We are responsible for the corruption we created ... It is not always Hosni Mubarak's fault (only most of the time but not always!).

elections: In or out?

I heard Ayman Nour deciding to side with ElBaradie and Boycott the elections Stating that He and his followers respected the experience of ElBaradie in this area and respected his decision to boycott the elections.

Over here in USA the media has been critizing Elbaradie for that decision thinking it will weaken an already weak opposition in Egypt.

In my mind the real road to political reform depends on the people asking for their rights. If all Egyptians are educated and know their rights in having clean transparent government the NDP will be out overnight and many of its leaders will be in courts defending their records.

The problem is the 30% (not sure) of Egyptians do not even read, let alone understand their rights.

Boycotting the election would be really effective if the NDP actually care about its image infront of the Egyptians or if the world really care about Egypt internal politics. I think both conditions are not satisfied (in Mathematical terms). The NDP does not care about its iamge because it is already black and because the 30% who do not read and may another 30% that read but do not understand are not interested in this image. The other factor (international community) is also not effective. East Europe was even more important to the West and still East Europe was not politically reformed untill its own people asked for their rights. I think the west in general care about political reform in Egypt but not on the expense of their interest (Oil + Isreal's future). So I do not think the west would for example put sanctions in case the NDP run alone and won all seats (in worst case scenario).

So, basically what I am saying is that running and winning a fake election (with 88 seats handed over to various "oposition" parties) would not hurt the NDP grip on power that much.

On the other hand the reform can not be brought by 1 or even 5 million well educated bright Egyptians who signed on www.taghyeer.net; I am one of them :). I know that one of them alone was enough to ruin the false contract between Talat Mostapha group and Ministry of Housing. Impressive as this was, one still needs the majority (+50%) of Egyptians to reach this level of education to get a real reform.

This will happen slowly (ElBaradie said that himself) and it is silly to expect this happening overnight.

Kafia fought hard to get us the right to demonstrate in the street. It will take more years to get us the right of clean and transparent election.

Again the NDP would not care or be hurt (seriously) if they "win" all the seats, considering how horrible are the political systems around us in this region.

So my wish for today: All the educated honest Egyptians would run in the coming election and
-Do their best to win (even if it is impossible in some areas).
-Do their best to win lawsuits against the government to have each of the 7 demands of Taghyeer.
-Bring Cameras and cell phone to the election to show the world how the election is being run and how fake the results will be (as we all expect).

Why doing all this? Because we (the Egyptians) win more this way! Because we have to fight for our rights, they will never be handed over to us! Never!!

www.taghyeer.net

أجاب الصغير p l a y

Elbaradie tweet:

This is what I wanted to hear from him. This means that after we change this government we will go after all those who tortured Egyptians.

When will we get 1 million signatures?

I have been collecting data for the past few weeks. You can see the impact of www.tawkatonline.com on the campaign in the chart.

My dear reader Lasto adri *Blue* asked me how can I predict the day we can collect the 1 million signature. Well, ... I have built my own mathematical model based mainly on differential equations. The model is not that accurate (otherwise I should be very rich playing on the stockmarket) ... but I think it is decent! The model right now predicts that it will be on 9/24/2010. I will keep you updated with any changes in that model.

Here are some parts of his article in shorouknews.com:

Today I read in Almesryoon webpage that the Police chased those who tried to put the signs of the new campaign of مصر كبيرة عليك next to Gamal posters and .... I wondered why they are posting new signs and paying money for that ... Can not they just use paint or pen or ... to make fun of the original poster? Would not that be faster and cheaper?

I wish someone else from Kafia movement starts a new campaign to nominate eladly against Gamal. Well may be Kafia is already doing this??? did not elkordy (a Kafia member) started this? Is it working? is the NDP fighting internally some for gamal and some for Hosni? I guess it is working!!

if we want to learn from the USA look at the number of foreign professors and students that are encouraged to come and work in the top American universities and are even given American citizenship to stay and keep working to benefit the USA. If the egyptian cinema wants to keep the lead it should not only allow arab and non Arab actors and actresses to work freely but even try hard to recruit more of them. In such environment it will grow not just to هوليود الشرق but also الغرب

I wish Dr Ashraf allow all Arab actresses and actors to act freely just like نور و هند صبري because it is fair to do so and because مصر اكبر بكتير من الهبل بتاع النقابة ده وافتكروا فريد و اسمهان و الريحاني و صباح و النابلسي و و و و

When will we collect 1 million signatures for change?

Assuming things remain the same ..... my calculations say Sept. 5, 2010!!!

I will keep you updated. Please sign!

You can read the story at almesryoon webpage. Also here in the USA there is huge interest in using LEGO to excite the kids about science and technology. You can see it at USFIRST webpage. My wish for today is that some nice rich person in the Egypt decide to put his/her money into something similar.

I know there are kids on the streets of Egypt without food or shelter and some would say taking care of them first is more important than "exciting" Egyptian kids about science and technology .... but I say all those things are important. Yes, we should not leave a single child on the street ... but also we should get some of the brightest students in Egypt and educate them at the highest level possible.

I remember when someone did really well in the adadia exams, a letter from the minister of education would offer to put him for the three years of secondary education in a dakhli school for "outstanding" students and that the minister will pay for all the expenses. Such programs should be expanded to adadi and even elementry schools (without the dakhli part) in every city in Egypt.

Yes, we should take care of all our schools but ... more important, we should have a distinguished school in every city in Egypt. Those kids will be the people that will build Egypt once the NDP is out of the picture (after 20 years???).

Numbers do not lie !!

Today those who signed on Taghyeer demands are:

91,169 on www.taghyeer.net
398,131 on www.tawkatonline.com

with a total 489,300 online (not sure how many paper-based only).

The important point is that almost 500,000 Egyptians are saying they are not afraid and they are ready to be jailed by the police if needed. When will you join and sign? Do not wait until you are one of those who will sign at the end. I signed before there were 20,000!! I can not be more proud of myself.

Go ahead and get an early number! You will have a good story to tell your grandchildren 30 years from now!

What to do with Mubarak Jr photos on the streets?

I read this comment on Zenobia webpage:

"The other thing is that I sure hope that our beloved Egyptian citizens will actively exercise the habit of messing up street flyers, plz plz dnt take them down but actually make a mockery out of them that should send a stronger message, after all we are known for our sense of humor ;) "

Looking forward to see how this will work out! It should be very funny! We need a good laugh after all.

=========
=========
=========
=========

An article by محمد عبد الحكم دياب about the future of Egypt:

to the NDP with love

Excellent site for Arabic songs lyrics:

Here is a song for the NDP leaders from an Egyptian citizen

Today in Alquds you can read:

In this article the writer is attacking البرادعي accusing him that is hesitating to lead and is asking him to be like Ghandi or MLK and do not wait for the Egyptian people to move but instead starts the move by himself!!

I think the writer is wrong. البرادعي is already leading. The idea of the 7 demands that attracted 70,000 on www.taghyeer.net (I am one of those who signed very early on; my number is less than 20,000 :)) and another 80,000 on MB site http://www.tawkatonline.com/ is what exactly needed for now.

It is not easy for people to shed their fear and sign. It took me few days myself before I realize that my duties toward my family and country is much more serious than my fear. I had to make sure that my country is a good place for my family to liveand that would not happen if I am afraid of even asking for these rights from the NDP government. Signing this petition was a turning point; very similar to the turning point in the the Happy Life of Francis Macomber (short story by Earnst Hamingway). Every Egyptian needs this turning point where he/she says it is OK, you can jail me, here is my name, ID number, ... go ahead, I just want my country to be free and I am ok with being jailed for few weeks/years for this to happen.

Rather than listening to فرانسوا باسيلي and try to be Nelson Mandala, البرادعي is doing a much smarter thing, he is turning every one of us (Egyptians) into a Mandala. It is working!

Just like Francis Macomber become a free man after facing his fears, we will soon all become free from fear after signing the petition.

Now for the rest of the charges that فرانسوا باسيلي wrote like:

Really?? Are you serious. To lead means that you cannot travel and tell the world what is going inside your country? I do not think so!

Really? Are you even reading the news lately. البرادعي has made very smart move recently by attracting the MB into his camp. This will change the game and put the NDP into a very weak position (80,000 signature in only few days, compared with 70,000 in few months on www.taghyeer.net, just amazing!!). This move may have angered many west-leaning Egyptians and made them skeptic about the future ahead. Do not! This is a must-take step. There is no change without MB and البرادعي is doing it right.

In short البرادعي is doing it right and the reason why I am trusting him is that he is not asking for any thing for himself. That is the only guarantee to succeed in public life.

To lead a change you need an army of free men/women. البرادعيis making this army now.
So hands-off the man (at least until the change is here!!)

Abdou Tawfik Ismail

Yesterday I watched him on Dream2. He stated that it was Naser who prepared the army for 73 and not Sadat. However, he said that Naser being the most important figure in our history made a terrible mistake in 67 and even 56. He gave an excellent example; if a taxi deriver makes a mistake is one thing but if a tractor driver makes a mistake it is another.

To me it is pretty simple: Those were humans they never make every thing right or every thing wrong. That is why democracy of any form (For example Shoura) is crucial to fix those errors before they are reality.

.
In Almesryoon today 7/5/2010:

and on youtube you will see who they are talking about:

Finally, if this is true then the Egyptians who let this go without punishment really deserve what is happening and will happen to them.

Personally, I do not want to believe this. It is too much for my brain.

I really wish it is not true.

The old Egyptian and the young Egyptian were drinking the tea together and chatting ...

Old E: Did not I tell you that Egypt will get out of all trouble as it always did.

Young E: ????

Old E: Did not you hear about

Yound E: Yes, this guy managed to get a court Order to show how Talat Mostafa company has took the land from the government almost for free and made the government lose almost 200 Billion EGP (and not Millions).

Old E: As long as there are Egyptians like this guy we are safe. He also announced while he was talking to Mona ElShazaly on Dream that the current minister; Magharabi, has stolen land for his own company as well and that is his next target. The next thing you hear, President Mobarak ask that the land of Magharabi to return back. I am really proud of حمدي الفخراني.

Yound E: I can see what you are saying but: Magharabi is still in power and did you hear that

Old E: This is shamless to say the least. They are saying that an Egyptian can not protect the land of Egypt? Who else should defend it?

Young E: It is really sad ... you feel that there is no way out ...

Old E: No ... do not say that حمدي الفخراني will take care of them.

Young E: It is not enough ... every Egyptian should do his part ... It is too much for one man to protect Egyptian land.

Old E: hmmmmm ....

Wear black until the government is gone

Here is an idea. Let us wear black for as long as it takes until there is real election in Egypt. I was watching Mostafa Abdu on Dream and it is scary how the elections in sport clubs are also fake. Until when this will go on.

Old Egyptian and Young Egyptian

The young Egyptian was concerned about what is happening between the lawyers and the judges in Egypt. The old Egyptian was trying to explain what is going on ...

Young E: What is going on? Are the judges to be blamed in this?

Old E: It is complicated .... let me explain to you .... What you see is the result of "Tawreeth" Tawreeth in every thing. Not just Mobarak and gamal but University professors, Doctors, Police Officers and judges ... all of them try to put their kids in their profession.

Young E: So by doing this they make some people thing they are above the law.

Old E: Yes, if you are Police officer and son of a Police officer and grandson of a Police officer ... or if you are a judge and son of a judge and grandson of a judge ... of course you will think that you are above the law.

Young E: But what really started all this friction between the lawyers and the judges?

Old E: Here is the story .... It is what happens to the law students after graduation. Those who graduate with high degree (but not from powerful family) sit without work and call themselves lawyers and those who graduate with very weak grades (but come from powerful families) become "Wakeel Niaba" ... and eventually the two meet ... the "Very Good" lawyer in front of the "Makbol" Wakil Niaba ... of coure the "Wakeel Niaba" will treat the "Very Good" Lawyer is a piece of dirt ... and the "Very Good" Lawyer has a certin threeshold before he/she can explode!

Young E: So what you are saying is that we (Egyptians) are to blame for the corruption and "koasa" that we have been using and not the National Party Government and Mobarak?

Old E: Yes, the people themselves are contribtuing to this atmosphere ... but take it easy on them. This can all be traced to the Economical tough time we have. If you are a judge or a policeman and your kid is going to sit home with no work if you do not pull some strings for him/her, what you are going to do? especially with all your relatives, friends, and almost every one ... are doing the same for their own kids?

Young E: .....

Old E: I see you are sad! Do not!

Young E: ???

Old E: Egypt has been thru very tough times all over the history and somehow it eventually recovers! There are very good Egptians every where and those will save the day.

Young E: Yes, you are right. I used to have a professor in my unviersity that was amazing. He was very knowledgable and very fair. He used to go to his landlord every year and raise the rent on himself just because he wanted to be fair. This professor was taking the microbus every day from the front of the university to go home and we all used to see him whereas many other professors were riding fancy cars. He did not have a car! and he was by far the best professor I had in my university.

Old E: See ... it those Egyptians that will save the day. Do not worry!

Young E: ......
